The most important feature of the Rottler porting system is the simplicity of the complete process from digitizing to programming to actually machining the heads. Rottler has developed this system for over 8 years. Most customers buying porting machines today do not have CNC programming knowledge and require a system that is easy and fast to learn and to reproduce heads fast in order to be able to pay for their investment. Most operators are able to learn the system in 3 to 5 days. Rottler utilizes TOUCH SCREEN technology to simplify machine control operation. Touch screen allows separate control panels to display only the information and control buttons that are required for that particular operation to be displayed and hide info and buttons not required at that time. Most CNC machines have large control panels with ‘hundreds’ of buttons and this makes learning the machine slow and complicated, which is stressful to a new operator. 

New for 2010

Rottler launched new P69 5 axis digitizing and porting machine at PRI 2009, replacing P55 which has been on market for 8 years. Main difference is P69 is larger for long 6 cylinder heads such as John Deere used for tractor pulling and 6 cylinder 24 valve heads with timing chain/belt casting on the end of the head. 

Versatility 

The CAD/CAM system allows various milling operations like: Valve Spring Seat machining, high lift camshaft clearance, cam follow bore machining, engraving, head gasket surfacing, manifold surface milling. So in a nutshell, the P69 is a 5 axis machine that is geared toward head porting, but can perform any operation that a standard 5 axis machine is capable of. So you get the best of both worlds. 

CNC Head Porting Training 

Your browser may not support display of this image. Rottler offer training videos, factory training and on-site training after delivery. Rottler also offers internet support after installation. Skype and a video camera are installed for video conferencing for internet support. This is a very handy feature to be able to instantly contact Rottler for help or support right on the machine without even making a phone call and having a video camera to help explain questions. 

Rottler offer a course of training videos and instruction guidelines. Once a customer has confirmed the order of a new machine, a software package including the machines operating system, training videos and instructions are sent to the customer so that the operator can learn the software before the arrival of the new machine. Should the operator feel that extra training is required before the arrival of the machine, Rottler offer hands-on factory training. 

CNC Head Porting Software and Operating System 

Rottler uses Windows OS and Touch Screen Technology through 19” touch panel. The Windows software has many advantages such as a common user interface that the whole world is familiar with. If you know how to run email, an internet browsers or MS Word, you're in a great position to learn this P69 head porting system. Windows also allows for easy software upgrading online and even an automatic update option.

Software also allows ports to be designed on stand-alone computer, transferred to the machine and port cylinder head.

Rottler offer factory training and on-site training after delivery. Rottler also offer internet support after installation. (I would also mention about the training videos. I'm not sure how much people are out there are using the vidoes, but I know Nathan used them and would have not have been nearly as successful without them. I'm not sure how many new videos Mark has done, but anytime spent on videos pays back 100:1... all modern training of any new programs is done by videos, learning Windows, learning C++ programming, all other CAD/CAM... if we don't mention training videos, we'll be 'behind the times')

The PC-based single processor control system by Direct Motion is highly interactive and very responsive. It allows the machine to do complex and sophisticated functions that are only possible within the PC processor. The upgradeable software can be networked for
enhanced efficiency. The Advanced DM software tools allow manipulation of port design and minimize digitizing time. This allows an operator to pick up data once and tweak the design (including hand-ported designs) as needed.

The P69 has very fast raid movements and cutting speed with infinite look-a-head capabilities offering fast production times. A common V8 cylinder head can be ported in about 1 hour.

Digitizing is done automatically on the machine using a Reinshaw probe, eliminating the need for an expensive coordinate measuring machine (CMM). All programming and operations are done directly on the Rottler P69 Touch Screen Control Panel.


Spindle in 5th Axis
The high speed spindle of the P69 is built into the 5th axis of the machine with the center of the cutting tool on the same center as the 5th axis. The spindle is able to tilt 55 degrees to the left and right. This unique feature allows easier set up and faster porting time compared to fixed spindle machines.

Competitive machines have a fixed spindle and therefore have to tilt the cylinder head left and right which makes complicated programming and each port has to be programmed differently. 

PC based single processor control system by Direct Motion
Highly interactive & very responsive there are no communication lags between user interface and machine. Allows machine to do complex and sophisticated functions that are only possible within PC

Near zero backlash
Overall accuracy to .001 allows operator to accurately match the hand ported sample and ensures ports will line up with no steps. No hand work necessary! CNC ported head will normally flow within 1% of sample head. 

Specialized cutters and tool holders
Minimize run out, chatter, noise and clogging. Tool life is extended and surface finish is improved over other tools. 

Standard fixtures, tools & tooling are interchangeable between machines

Automatic port digitizing with Reinshaw probe
Digitizing is done on machine eliminating the need for expensive CMM. You can program and run on same machine all with DM software. 

Advanced DM software tools
Allows manipulation of port design and minimizes digitizing time. This allows operator to pickup data once and tweak the design on the screen. Operator can tweak hand ported design if necessary. 

5th axis is center of ball cutter
Allows +/- of 55 degrees on 5th axis to access all port geometry. X axis does not chase the 5th axis motion making machine very accurate and ports all the same. 

4th & 5th axis offer rotary vector gear reducers
This gives machine better accuracy and much longer life than worm gear driven machines 

Baldor servo motors
High quality, reliable Baldor servo motors can run at high temperatures and allow off the shelf replacement. 

All these features allow operator decreased set-up time and increased productivity. Operator can rough in valve jobs and blend seats with port and chamber for less manual work on seat & guide machines. The machine is fully enclosed for safety and neatness.
